Why does Place-based learning matters for international teachers?

Stepping into a new country as a teacher brings both excitement and challenge. You arrive with training, strategies, and global perspectives, but sometimes, lessons don’t quite land with students the way you expect. Why? Because learning is always shaped by place, the culture, environment, and community in which students grow up.

  • Use the local market to practice addition, subtraction, and percentages: compare prices of fruits, calculate discounts, or tally how many shops sell the same product.
  • Measure the length of the classroom, the width of the playground, or the height of a tree using rulers, ropes, or even footsteps, then calculate the area or perimeter.
  • Collect data from the community (e.g., how many families own bicycles vs. scooters) and turn it into charts and graphs.

  • Ask students to interview a local shopkeeper, farmer, or artisan and then write a short story or news article based on their life.
  • Encourage them to write poems about the sounds, colors, or smells of their own street, village, or city.
  • Use local folktales or legends as reading material and have students rewrite them in their own words.

  • Compare local festivals, food, or music with those from another region or country, what’s unique, what’s shared?
  • Visit a historic building, monument, or marketplace nearby and create a timeline of its role in the community.
  • Ask students to map their own route to school and then compare transportation patterns across classmates.
  • Art and Culture
  • Work with local craftspeople (potters, weavers, painters) to learn techniques, then let students create their own art.
  • Have students draw or photograph important places in their community (such as a temple, mosque, church, park, or bus stop) and share the stories behind them.
